Saturday 24th November
10 Muharram 1434 A.H.

When the Prophet came to Madina, he found the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura (i.e. 10th of Muharram). They used to say: "This is a great day on which Allah saved Moses and drowned the folk of Pharaoh. Moses observed the fast on this day, as a sign of gratitude to Allah." The Prophet said, "I am closer to Moses than they." So, he observed the fast (
on that day) and ordered the Muslims to fast on it. - Bukhari
It is very important to remind Muslims at this time of the year the clear blessings that fasting on the day of Ashura - has in Islam. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Fasting the day of Ashura (is of great merits), I hope that Allah will accept it as an expiation for (the sins committed in) the previous year" (Muslim).
Also, fasting the 9th of Muharram is a highly recommended Sunnah. Imam At-Tirmidhi reported that Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to say: We should fast on two days: the 9th and 10th of Muharram to distinguish ourselves from the Jewish community. (At-Tirmidhi)
It is, therefore, the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to fast on the 9th and 10th of Muharram.
