Over 3000 Villagers Embrace Islam in Togo

Sunday, February 17, 2008   10:59    News ID : 223711

Lome –– As many as 3000 villagers embraced Islam in the African country of Togo, thanks to the relentless efforts being made by the Da'awa workers and preachers belonging to the Libya-based World Islamic Call Society (WICS).

Some 55 people from Mozambique and Swaziland have also joined the fold of Islam.
Chiefs and inhabitants of the Togolese Village of Tamina, 400 km from the capital Lome, embraced Islam enmasse, according to a report carried by Al Da'awa Al Islamiya, official newspaper of WICS.
In Adkurum Village, about 1250 people with their village chief converted to Islam whereas another 1750 villagers from the neighboring Aghtedi embraced the divine religion.

WICS office in Lome late last month held a ceremony during which the village chiefs and their followers proclaimed their Shahada to join Islam. The ceremony was also attended by several Da'awa workers, local sheikhs and prominent Muslim figures in the country.

Meanwhile, 39 people from Mozambique and another 16 from Swaziland also embraced Islam through the efforts of the WICS Da'awa workers.

The Society is also conducting religious classes for the new converts so that they can learn the fundamentals of Islamic faith and jurisprudence in addition to the practical lessons about performing Islamic rituals, especially obligatory prayers.
