A TOTAL of 235 people have embraced the Islamic faith from January to June this year, statistics from the Islamic Da'wah Centre showed.
Ethnic Dusuns made up the largest number of conversions with 66 taking the leap of faith, followed by Iban with 62 people embracing Islam.
The first half of the year also saw 37 ethnic Chinese converting to Islam.
Forty-four Filipinos and two Thai nationals also embraced Islam.
The highest number of conversions were Brunei citizens, followed by temporary residents and permanent residents with 71 and 30 , respectively.
Brunei-Muara district recorded the highest number of conversions with 107, followed by Tutong with 56.
Belait registered 49 comversions and Temburong district saw 23 taking the leap of faith.
Statistics have also shown that the centre reported a steady number of conversions as more than 400 conversions were recorded every year.
The centre recorded the highest number of conversions in 2002, with 606 people embracing Islam.
The conversion involves the declaration of their faith in the Oneness of Allah (SWT) and the seal of Prophethood of Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) and embracing Islam by reciting the syahadah (declaration of faith) in the presence of a religious officer and Muslim witnessess.
New converts are also required to complete a 10-day guidance course that is needed prior to completing the guidance course, a 14-day foundation course as well as an extensive guidance Scheme I and II based on Islamic laws.
